How Do I Get Used to Low-Cut Boots?

QHi, Bill: I have skated inline marathons on mid-cuff inline skates for five years. But recently, I purchased low-cuff skates, and I find that wearing them, I feel a little wobbly and my feet and ankles get sore. Do you have any training tips or exercises to help with the transition to low-cuff skates? - Kevin in Chippewa Falls, WI

Hi, Kevin: For starters, make sure that your skates fit properly. Low-cut boots must fit snuggly. Otherwise, they don’t provide enough support.

What to Do About Too Loose Boots?

QHi, Bill: I really enjoy your column. I wonder if you could help me with something? I just returned to inline skating after a 12-year layoff. The first thing I noticed was the difference in wheel size. I bought a pair of K2 Radical 100mm skates and am getting used to the big wheels. But the skates seem too large for my feet. I have gone from two pair of socks to three. What are my options? - Thanks for your time. Dave

Will New Boots Cure My Ankle Problems?

QHello, Bill: After a few seasons on skates, I recently switched to a 4-wheel frame with 100mm wheels. But now I'm having problems with my ankles. I can't keep them straight. (See attached photo.) What should I do? Do I need new boots? - Janis Hofmanis, Riga, Latvia

Hi, Janis: It looks like your boots are the problem. They don't appear to fit properly. They are loose around your ankle and probably don't give your feet the proper support. From the look of it, I'd say your boots are costing you about 20 percent of your push.

By comparison, look at the skater in front of you in the photo. His boots are snug around the ankles, his legs and feet form a straight line...
